ADDITIONAL NOTES:

broadcasting from japan: the site is on the road again -- this time from a very small surfing village in the chiba prefecture of japan. it's just an hour out from tokyo, but couldn't be further from the big city pace. with only 8,000 residents, the village of onjuku is known for its famously photographed 1940s female ama divers, its arabian-themed beach, and of course, for its surf.

above, some of the japanese surf set on onjuku beach who were kind enough to pose for me between waves.

portraits of the japanese surf set at onjuku beach

Interesting set. Also thanks for the Ama divers link. There is something similar in Korea on the island of Cheju. The women there still dive although it's a dying art. Most of the divers are now in there 50's...

Nice sets! I've been there in my childhood. The place is very calm.

so I guess there's some kind of local regulation that requires japanese surfers to be good looking? great shots.
