ADDITIONAL NOTES:

i've been running into limitations with the lens i have (18 to 55mm f3.5/5.6)... while flexible for some basics, it doesn't let enough light in, is too far and not high enough in quality. after some research, i've purchased a new canon telephoto EF 85mm f1.8 lens, which, has been an immediate improvement. expect new examples as i learn the ins and outs... and as i buy more lenses. (i'm an official lens junkie.)

above, flynn larsen an amazing pro film photographer (and fellow art center alum) is a first subject for the new lens.

I hear you. The basic kit lens just doesn't cut it for me. Though it is cheap and does have a nice range, the sharpness could have been better.

If you want something fast and sharp check out the 50mm 1.8. Google it for reviews. It's so cheap it's almost like you have to get it. You can find one for around $65. I just purchased the 17-40L which is awesome but slower at f4. The 28-135IS is also pretty good but nothing is quite as good as the L series.

The 50mm 1.8 is most def. on my wishlist :) Compared to the 18-55 3.5/5.6 it is so sharp!
Check out photo.net/equipment/canon/efs18-55/ for a pretty convincing comparison on the 50 and 18-55 :o

I am also looking at the 28-105 3.5-4.5USM II which can be found for a nice price too.

I'll third the motion for the 50mm 1.8. I just picked one up today after seeing multiple recommendations on dpreview.com. Very impressive for a $70 lens. The short DOF will make for some very interesting portraits! Photos on my site soon to follow...

The 85mm f1,8 lense ist definitely known to be one of the sharpest out there. Good choice. I really like fixed focal length lenses and just by coincidencw I found the same lense yesterday for half the price in a closing down sale. Bargain if there ever was one.
