ADDITIONAL NOTES:

that's the statue of liberty in the distance. more info and lots of photos from the Smith/9th St Station at nycsubway.org:

This station is the highest elevated station in the system, at 80 feet... The station is over the street bridge, which in turn is over the Gowanus Canal. A view of the Gowanus Expressway built by Robert Moses of the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority is to the west of the southbound platform. The station affords a post card view of the lower Manhattan skyline and the train descending toward the Carroll Street tunnel portals.

I think I understand now. You are an archivist, collecting images from NYC at the turn of the century. A marvelous avocation. And you do it so well! Kudos on your dedication.

Great pictures and amazing place. If a made a correct conversion, 80 feet = 25 meters, which means a 5 floors building height. Incredible!

Every time I ride the F train through this station, I think, "Boy, that looks high". But 80 feet! I can't imagine climbing that every day...

The climb is not as bad as it seems. There are stairs and two sets of escalators.

However, this stop (which is the start/end of MY commute every day) is underfunded! Brooklynites, urge your city council people to clean up this beautiful view!

I love riding subway trains growing up in New York City. Some of those stations look more like a bridge such as the second, fourth and fifth pictures. But on the positive note they did a very good job on structural maintenence. My favorite part of the subway would have to be the elevated lines.
